Child Support, Colorado Springs, Attorney Steven Visser
Child Support in Colorado is calculated pursuant to specific statutory guidelines. Parents have a legal obligation to financially support their children, and in general, child support continues until the child reaches the age of 19.
Factors the Court will consider in establishing or modifying a child support order can include:
- Both parents’ gross monthly incomes (before taxes)
- Number of children under the age of 19
- Whether there are “other” children of the parties
- Whether spousal maintenance (alimony) is an issue
- Number of overnights with the other parent – parenting time
- Child care costs – educational and/or work related
- Health insurance – child’s share
- Extraordinary medical expenses – not covered under health insurance plans.
Once child support has been established/ordered, then the parent paying child support will, in most circumstances, want to make payments through the Family Support Registry (FSR).
It is very important to consult with an experienced attorney regarding the child support calculations to ensure that the calculation is accurate.
